Acupuncture is a system of medicine that originated in Asia over five thousand years ago that stimulates the natural healing abilities of the body. It is a tradition rich in theory and clinical application that also has the ability to focus on disease prevention. To an acupuncturist, illness is the manifestation of disharmony of the body’s life energy; of what we call Qi (chee). Qi flows in pathways, or meridians throughout the body and the internal organs, thus integrating the body in an organic way. By inserting very fine needles into the acupuncture points, the areas where the Qi can be accessed, the acupuncturist is able to adjust imbalances within the body and thereby treat pain and disease.
Your acupuncturist's aim is to alleviate your ailments and improve general body health and function. Several factors contribute to determine the number of treatments required to effect change. These include your particular character and constitution, age, lifestyle, overall health, and the severity of your complaint. Acupuncture's effects are cumulative, long lasting, and enhanced by appropriate diet, exercise and lifestyle.
